Sharing stories from God’s word

“Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” Jeremiah 23:29

This Sunday we talked about our experiences of sharing scripture with the people we encounter each day. This is a new discipline for all of us and it can become easy to lose heart when we haven’t managed to share with who we said we would. In Acts 1:8 Jesus promises that we will receive his power and that we will be witnesses. But what are we witnesses of? A disciple maker that we have been learning from puts it like this “This is how we witness: We witness to the impact of God and the impact of his word in our lives.”

This means that as we read and learn stories from God’s word, first we pray for him to impact our own lives and then we take this story and our own testimony out with us, ready to share them with whoever God leads us to.

We were encouraged by the story of a friend from another church who recently spent time memorising the creation story - she told it over and again to her children, repeating it to herself until she knew the story enough to retell it in her own words. Once she had done this she asked God to show her who to share the story with. One day, she was having her hair done and talking about her faith to her hairdresser, her hairdresser asked her “So tell me the creation story that you believe.” What a priceless opportunity, our friend was ready!

So this week we have committed as a team to ask God for a story from his word, perhaps one that we have already studied together, perhaps a story that has been important to us in recent years or perhaps a new story that God is prompting us to learn. We plan to spend time reading, rereading and retelling the story until we know it off by heart. We will ask ourselves what God is asking us to do in response to the story so that we can allow him to impact our lives through his word. And then we will keep these stories and our testimonies in our hearts and minds, equipped, ready and praying for an opportunity to share them in the weeks to come.

When we come together next Sunday we are going to spend some time practising sharing our stories to one another. I can’t wait to hear from you all!

Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy

I recently had the incredible privilege of visiting Antakya, a beautiful city in the South of Turkiye that was among the worst affected by the recent earthquakes in February. It’s been hard to know what to share since I have returned.

Keeping it simple

Keeping it simple

It's super easy to make things complicated. It's almost as if we do it by default. We do in so much of life. We also do it in our walk with Jesus, both alone and together as the church.
